Feb. 2014

February 2014 driver/team/series news:

Dylan Martin brings smiles and tabs to the Shriners Hospital (February 26, 2014 Tampa, Florida) What do 8 pounds of tabs add up to…that is easy, tons and tons of smiles for the children at the Shriners Hospital. Dylan is on another mission for his friends at the hospital. He has been collecting the tabs off of soda cans. They were delighted to see the 8 pounds of tabs that he brought with him. The hospital is able to turn them in for equipment for the kids.
Every time Dylan visits the children here it is a unique experience. This time was no different. When Dylan entered the first waiting area for the kids he ran into a beautiful lab that was there to cheer up the kids. It is always nice to see others there helping the children to forget where they are and just enjoy a moment.
As Dylan walked from room to room, he introduced himself to children that weren’t even from this country. It doesn’t matter that they don’t speak English because through his smile and racing suit, Dylan is always able to connect with them. He has this incredible caring atmosphere around him that without words the kids feel that he is there because he cares. So after handshakes, photo ops and even a few high fives, Dylan walks out the front lobby knowing that even if it was for just a brief moment, the kids he saw today thought about something other than being in a hospital.
If you ever need to smile, take a minute and go take a tour through the Shriners Hospital. No matter if it is a nurse, doctor, volunteer or a patient, everyone is always smiling. This place cures a lot of kids but most importantly it brings smiles! (Press Release Credit – Kim Scheffler)

Tracy Hines Opens 2014 Sprint Car Season in Florida NEW CASTLE, Ind.—Feb. 19, 2014— Tracy Hines had a pretty successful trip to Florida last season, winning two of the three Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series races at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala. Making the feat even more impressive was the fact that those races were the first three events he ran in a self-owned machine, after quickly putting a team together in the short couple of months following the 2012 campaign.
With a full year of team ownership now under his belt, Hines returns to the Sunshine State to open the 2014 Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series season this week at Bubba Raceway Park, with a new primary sponsor, The Carolina Nut Company, adorning his familiar No. 4 DRC with a Chevy-powered Stanton Racing Engine under the hood.
The Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series portion of the Third Annual Bubba Army Winternationals at Bubba Raceway Park is set for Thursday, Feb. 20, Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22. An open practice night will open the event tonight.
“We are definitely ready to get back to the track,” said Hines. “We have The Carolina Nut Company on-board this year and that has us even more excited to get the season underway. That along with the support of our returning and other new sponsors has enabled us to make some upgrades to our program. We’ve brought on Taylor Courtney as a full-time employee. We built another new car to start the year, and have some engines that we believe will put us in the hunt, night in and night out.”
Hines scored victories on the second and third nights of the 2013 Bubba Army Winternationals. He finished 11th in the opener, after getting caught up in a four-car accident on the fourth circuit. On the second night, he took the lead on the final lap, from Robert Ballou, who suffered a flat tire. In the finale of the 2013 Bubba Army Winternationals, Hines led all 30 laps to earn the win.
“Last year we obviously opened the season on a strong note in Florida,” shared the veteran driver. “We had a good combination for the track, and caught things just right those two nights. Florida is pretty unique compared to the rest of the races and tracks we go to during the season. The surface at Ocala has a sandy-base and they have added some clay, the last couple years, but you still have to do things a bit different than you would at tracks in the Midwest or on the West Coast. We’ll take a look at the surface when we get there and see what changes they’ve made and go from there.”
In his career at Bubba Raceway Park, Hines has made eight starts, dating back to 2011. He has three top-10 finishes in those races and has finished 13th or better in seven of those eight races. Along with his two wins last season, he was ninth in the finale at the three-eighths-mile in 2012.
Last season, Hines competed in 33 races with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series earning two wins and recording 20 top-10 finishes. He scored a pair of runner-up finishes at Canyon Speedway Park in Arizona, late in the season during the Hall of Fame Classic. Hines found himself on the podium during the Eastern Storm Tour at Susquehanna Speedway in Pennsylvania, as well as at the Terre Haute Action Track in his home state of Indiana and at I-96 Speedway in Michigan. The native of New Castle, Ind., stopped the clocks first on four occasions with the series in time trials in 2013. He wrapped up the season sixth in points in his first season driving his self-owned machine.
Hines opens the 2014 Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series season with 45 career wins, which is fourth all-time, just one behind Jack Hewitt, two back of Dave Darland and seven in arrears to Tom Bigelow, the winningest sprint car driver in USAC history. The 2014 season will take the 2002 series champion to 22 tracks in 10 tracks over the course of the nearly 40-race season.
“We’ve really worked hard on our short track program this year,” said Hines. “We only have a handful of races on half-miles, so we have to be at our best on the smaller tracks. Last year we had a good set-up for the larger tracks and we strive to have the same consistency on the smaller tracks. We’ve worked hard this off-season and expect to win races and be in contention every time we pull into the pit area.”
Along with contesting the entire Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series calendar, Hines will also race the full Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series schedule and Honda USAC National Midget Series campaign. (Tracy Hines Racing PR)

Kraig Kinser Earns a Pair of Top-10 Finishes at Volusia Speedway Park BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Feb. 17, 2014— Facing stiff competition night in and night out is what the DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida is all about. Drivers from coast-to-coast head to the Sunshine State to open their season and this ramped up level of competition is a great way for a driver to prepare for the rigors of the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season. That’s the approach that Kraig Kinser takes. When the final checkered flag of the 2014 DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment flew on Sunday, Feb. 16, the third-generation had earned a pair of top-10 finishes in the Mesilla Valley Transportation/Casey’s General Store/King Racing Products Maxim.
The finale of the DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment saw Kinser record his second ninth-place finish of the week. That run marked his first top-10 performance of the season with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. Kinser took the green flag in the 15th position and worked his way into the top-10 by just the fourth circuit. He would run among the top-10 for the remainder of the 30-lap A-Feature, crossing the line ninth.
Kinser opened the final night at Volusia by turning the eighth-fastest lap in time trials of the 34 entries. He followed that up with a third-place showing in the fourth heat race to earn a spot in the main event.
Kinser opened the DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment with a ninth-place finish with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions on Thursday, Feb. 13. The native of Bloomington, Ind., began the night as the 12th-fastest driver of the 43 entrants during time trials. He worked his way from the fourth starting spot to finish second in the fourth heat race to earn a spot in the A-Feature. In the main event, Kinser started eighth and ran among the top-10 for the entire 30 laps, taking the checkered flag ninth. The originally scheduled opener for the All Stars on Wednesday, Feb. 12, fell to rain and was not rescheduled.
On the opening night of the 2014 World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season, Friday, Feb. 14, Kinser finished 17th after starting 23rd. He timed in 25th-quickest of the 37 drivers that hit the half-mile. Kinser started seventh in the first heat race and finished in that same position, which put him in the B-main. He started fifth and finished fourth in the B-main to earn a spot in the 30-lap main event.
Kinser finished 15th on the second night of the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season on Saturday, Feb. 15. He timed in 20th-fastest of the 35 entries that took qualifying laps. Kinser finished fourth in the fourth heat race to punch his ticket to the main event. He lined up 19th and was able to gain a few positions to finish 15th.
“The week didn’t go quite as well as we would have liked, but we have something to build on,” said Kinser. “We got better as the week went on and qualified among the top-10 on the final night and that put us in a much better position, though we still started in the middle of the field for the feature. We have a couple weeks now to get ready for Las Vegas and definitely learned a few things in Florida that we can apply when we head out there. The main thing is still qualifying up front and getting in the dash and that’s what we are looking to do out west.”
Kinser, who is currently 13th in points with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, just 12 markers out of the top-10, returns to action with the series in the FVP Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, March 5–6. (Kraig Kinser Racing PR)

Kraig Kinser Opens the 2014 Season at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Feb. 12, 2014— Every new season begins with a great amount of excitement and optimism for Kraig Kinser. After returning from Australia, where he won twice and finished in the top-10 in all eight of his starts during the off-season, the 2014 World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season can’t open soon enough for the third-generation driver. Kinser is set to open the World of Outlaws campaign with a trio of races this weekend at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, following a pair of starts with the UNOH All Star Circuit at the half-mile on Wednesday, Feb. 12 and Thursday, Feb. 13.
The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series portion of the DIRTCar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment begins on Friday, Feb. 14, continues on Saturday, February 15 and concludes Sunday, Feb. 16. Each night will feature a 30-lap, $10,000-to-win main event. The three races at Volusia open an 85-plus race World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series schedule for Kinser aboard the Mesilla Valley Transportation/Casey’s General Store/King Racing Products Maxim.
“It’s always good to get a new season underway,” said Kinser. “I was honestly ready to get the season going when I got back from Australia. It was great to get some seat time down there and to pick up a couple wins and run near the front just about every night down there. That certainly boosts the confidence heading into the season and we feel like we like made some good gains in the off-season at the shop.”
Kinser finished ninth on opening night at Volusia last year. He followed that up with a third-place performance on the second night and was 11th in the finale. The native of Bloomington, Ind., was third in time trials on opening night, 10th on night two and was fifth on the speed charts in the finale, with a stout field of nearly 40 cars from coast-to-coast in attendance each night. Kinser left the Sunshine State fourth in points in 2013.
The 2005 winner of the Knoxville Nationals was victorious at Volusia Speedway Park in 2005 with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions. Kinser has made 19 feature event starts with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at Volusia, earning 10 top-10 finishes in those races, with five of those being top-five performances. Kinser’s third-place showing on the second night of last year’s DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment marked his best finish with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at the half-mile located about a half hour west of Daytona Beach.
“I’ve always run pretty well at Volusia,” noted Kinser. “It’s a unique track for sure, with the complexion of the surface, having a sandy base to it. It takes a lot of horsepower and the way the air is down there, you usually are putting out plenty of power. Last year we qualified well each night and that will definitely be a key again this year, with how the Outlaws format is. It will be good to have a couple of nights to try some things in the All Stars races.”
Last season, Kinser was victorious with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at Orange County Fair Speedway in New York, aboard his familiar No. 11K. He picked up 34 top-10 finishes on the year, with 10 of those being top-five showings, en route to finishing 11th in points. Kinser was fastest in time trials at Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon, during the annual Gold Rush Tour and earned bonus points for qualifying among the top-five on 10 occasions. Kinser picked up the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award three times in 2013. Over the course of the season he won five heat races and raced his way into the dash 22 times.
Kinser opens the 2014 season with 15 career World of Outlaws A-Feature wins, with 12 of those triumphs coming aboard the No. 11K. Nearly 90 races are currently on the World of Outlaws schedule that will see Kinser compete at over 54 tracks in 24 states and three Canadian provinces.
“We have quite the schedule this year,” said Kinser. “This is very reminiscent of the first couple of years I was on the road when there were 90-plus races a year. We have a good mix of tracks that we traditionally visit and a couple new ones as well this year, which is always fun. Starting the year off on the right foot at Volusia is always the goal, and to carry some momentum west for all the races out there. The off-season went by pretty quick and we are certainly ready to get back racing.”
The 2014 campaign will mark the final time that Kinser’s father and team owner, Steve, the 20-time World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion, competes for a series title. (Kraig Kinser Racing PR)

Justin Bolton to compete in ZLoop Big 10 for Lee Faulk Racing Denver, NC – 2/10/14 – After a very successful start to his career with Lee Faulk Racing in 2013, Justin will continue with LFR to race in the ZLoop Big 10 Championship at Hickory Motor Speedway. After his first six races in a stock car last season, Justin accomplished 2 wins out of 5 top 5 finishes and 1 top 10 finish. His second win coming in the coveted Fall Classic 100 at Hickory Motor Speedway in his last race of the season for 2013.
Bolton will make the move to late model stock cars this year and compete for the ZLoop Big 10 championship at Hickory Motor Speedway. Justin who is already considered a “veteran” of the team after one short year will have a few faces to learn as well. Not only will he have new teammates Kate Dallenbach and Bret Holmes but Bolton will be working with his new crew chief Bobby Orr as well.
Bobby Orr, the son of one of short tracks great, the late Pete Orr will work full time with LFR this year, specifically with Justin Bolton as crew chief and spotter.
“We have grown every year we have been in business and we felt like it was time to surround ourselves with more great people and talent. Bobby has been close to our family my whole life and I look at him as a brother. He will fit great with our system and knows a lot about these cars. He learned from one of the best, his dad. Bobby looks at this as more than a job but also something to be proud of and he takes pride in taking a part in building LFR better than ever. I know he’s going to give Justin 110% and I feel confident that they will be contending for wins this year as well. Justin showed last season he has the natural ability to win at this level and with his work ethic and focus there is no doubt in my mind he will be successful; again this season. ” Team manager Michael Faulk stated about the newly formed relationship.
Some people believe that running four late model teams is too much to handle however, LFR has a much different outlook on this. Rather than a disadvantage, the team believes being able to simulate working team conditions similar to that of a cup team will only help the drivers prepare better for what is to come as they move up the NASCAR ladder.
“From the next level on drivers will be forced to work with teammates in multi-car team situations. We try to model our business plan after those of the super powers in the big 3 NASCAR series. There will most likely not be a situation for these drivers fortunate enough to make it where they are the only driver on the team competing for the same goal. We feel that we offer an opportunity for young drivers to learn what it takes to win a championship under the pressure of a multi-car team situation. As far as I know we are the only driver development team that is structured in this way, therefore I believe this is a big advantage that our program offers over any other that will allow them a seamless transition into the next level of their career as they will be more prepared for what is to come. “ Faulk said.
Bolton finished 2013 with a win and he looks to continue his success into this season as his first ZLoop 100 lap event is the first race of the season on March 8, 2014. Bolton will also compete in the annual Fall Brawl 150, which the team also won in 2012 with driver Pietro Fittipaldi.

NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series Returns To Phoenix For 2014 Opener mun2 Hispanic Cable Network Will Broadcast Toyota 120 Live In Prime Time DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 7, 2014) – A debut that made history returns for an encore, as the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series will again open its season as part of Phoenix International Raceway’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Weekend with the Toyota 120 on Friday, Feb. 28.
In an historic first, the race will air LIVE on mun2 – the U.S. Hispanic cable network, a division of Telemundo Media.
Abraham Calderon won last year’s wildly popular inaugural event last season – a race that marked the first NASCAR international series to hold a points race in the U.S.
“NASCAR stock car racing has really grown over the last decade in Mexico, thanks in large part to the tremendous success of the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR Vice President of Touring & Weekly Racing. “Bringing the series to Phoenix, we are able to showcase to fans in the United States the exciting racing and high-level of competition of the series.”
This year’s race will be 120 laps, an increase in length from last year’s 75-lap event. Calderon, who led the final 62 laps to pick up his first career win in that race, will be back and will be challenged by the series’ rising young stars such as Daniel Suarez and Ruben Garcia Jr. Drivers from a dozen Mexican states including Chihuahua, Jalisco, and Sinaloa as well as Mexico City, will all be chasing defending series champion Rodrigo Perralta.
“At Deportes Telemundo we are very excited to bring the most popular motorsport in the U.S. to the Hispanic audience for the first time on our cable network mun2,” said Jorge Hidalgo, Telemundo Media’s Executive Vice President of Network Sports. “These highly popular NASCAR properties are a perfect complement to our Deportes Telemundo offering.”
The NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series is in its eighth year under the NASCAR banner. Three-time series champion German Quiroga has moved up to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, where he’ll be competing full-time, while Suarez is expected to also be one of the top challengers in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, where he’s driving for Rev Racing and NASCAR Drive for Diversity.
“Bringing back the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series is something that we started discussing the moment the checkered flag dropped on last year’s race,” said Bryan R. Sperber, President of Phoenix International Raceway. “The drivers really wowed our fans – the racing was tremendous from start to finish. It’s an important race for our track and our community, and it means a lot to have a sponsor the caliber of Toyota on board to help us put on this event.”
Phoenix is celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season, and the March weekend will also feature the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series as well as the season opener for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. (NASCAR Media PR)

Glasson stated, “I am so thankful for the opportunity this year to run a full season and get the valuable seat time I need. I am also excited to have Taylor with me this year. We are thrilled to have signed the full season this year.” In hopes of translating into some good results this year, Cole will return to the #12, a number he carried during his entire karting career. Martin Nesbitt, Team owner, went on to say, “Cole has already tested with us at Anderson Motor Speedway, and our entire team was impressed with how well he drove and improved throughout the test. Despite less than ideal conditions, he was running some impressive times. Jarett Andretti Secures USAC Sprint Car & Silver Crown Seat with Window World - Driver and Company to Race for Dirt and Pavement Championships INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Continuing to fill out a busy summer schedule, Andretti Autosport Short Track announced today that third generation driver Jarett Andretti will compete in every pavement United States Auto Club (USAC) Traxxas Silver Crown Series event and seventeen USAC National Sprint Car events, covering eleven states. The Sprint Car and Silver Crown Series are two of the most prestigious in all of open wheel racing, listing Jarett’s father John and great uncle Mario Andretti as graduates.
Window World®, a long time supporter of both Jarett and his father, will be the primary sponsor of the No. 4 Window World Silver Crown Car in each of the scheduled USAC Pavement races and the No. 18 Sprint Car for selected USAC races. The car will also carry associate sponsorship from Superior Auto, Schaeffer Oil and Stoops Freightliner during the series’ four-race pavement and seventeen-race dirt events.
For Andretti, who is already committed to a full dirt Sprint Car schedule throughout Indiana, the Sprint Car and Silver Crown races will add valuable experience to his promising career. “I got the opportunity to race at nine new race tracks last year and look forward to the challenge of facing more new tracks this year, thanks to Window World. To race around the country will help me gain more experience and progress even quicker.” said Andretti. “The USAC series has so much history and my family has deep roots racing Sprint and Silver Crown machines as well. Our goal is to have strong finishes for Window World and all of our supporters.”
The Andretti family’s deep tradition in the Sprint and Silver Crown Series attracted Window World to continue its support of Jarett in his climb up the motorsports ranks.”Our relationship with John goes back to the Daytona 500 and Indy 500, and more recently the Rolex 24 with Jarett and John,” said Tammy Whitworth, CEO of Window World. “Both Window World and Andretti Autosport are family companies, built upon passion, talent and hard work. Jarett has a promising future and Window World is proud to be a part of it.”
The Silver Crown Car and Andretti’s Sprint Car add experience to Jarett’s resume, which already includes championships in go-karts and the USAC Eastern Ignite Pavement Series. In 2012, Andretti competed in supermodifieds, capturing the Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway Rookie of the Year honors in that class. Last season, he competed in Sprint Cars and Silver Crown Cars, capturing the Lawrenceburg Speedway Rookie of the Year in the Sprint Car class.
Andretti is currently a junior at North Carolina State University in the honors program. (Breaking Limits   PR)
